SEKAT hands over MoU to education ministry

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 30 (Sin Chew Daily) — Representatives from 12 non-government organisations, including Seni Khat Action Team (SEKAT) and the Selagnor-KL Special Committee on Jawi Issue arrived at the education ministry at 11.30 a.m. this morning to hand over a memorandum of understanding with seven resolutions to deputy education director-general (policy and curriculum) Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim, who is also acting director-general.

The education ministry only allowed SEKAT secretary Arun Doraisamy and Malaysia Chinese Language Council president Datuk Eddie Heng Hong Chai to enter the building to meet Habibah.

The seven resolutions adopted by the National Jawi Congress are:

1. Reject the implementation of Jawi by force without discussions.

2. Reject the inclusion of Jawi in must-pass subject, Bahasa Malaysia.

3. Urge for Jawi to be introduced as an elective.

4. Uphold the use of Bahasa Malaysia as national language.

5. Uphold the spirit of the Constitution and the National Language Act.

6. Uphold the rights of vernacular schools and the learning of mother tongue.

7. Defer the introduction of Seni Khat pending further discussions.
