JOHOR BAHRU — The third stop of nationwide roadshow held in conjunction with the inaugural Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards, jointly organised by Sin Chew Daily and MCIL Multimedia Sdn Bhd (owner and operator of Sinchew.com.my), has now come to Johor Bahru.

The event working committee chairman Lenny Cheah gave a detailed explanation on the details of the Awards while Grant Thornton Malaysia partner Desmond Tan and senior executive director Seah Siew Yun talked about corporate financing and taxation respectively.

The general manager for sales and marketing, MCIL Multimedia Sdn Bhd, Lenny told the participants that Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards emphasises corporate strategic management, with small and medium-sized enterprises being the principal targets and invited non-SMEs the secondary targets.

She said the Awards offers the highest honours for small and medium-sized companies in Malaysia, paying tribute to SMEs with outstanding performances in significant business management codes of conduct which are indispensable strategic factors in the sustained development and organisational growth of these companies.

The registration deadline is May 31 and the evaluation panel will start the selection and evaluation procedures from June through July. Winners will be individually notified in August and the award presentation ceremony held on October 8.

"The independent evaluation panel is made up of distinguished representatives and leaders from various industries and trade organisations, namely the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong), the Malaysian Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance, the SMI Association of Malaysia, the Malaysian Entrepreneurs’ Development Association (PUMM), the Malaysian Retailer Chains Associations (MRCA), , the Branding Association of Malaysia, and senior management of Sin Chew Media Corporation."

One of the main speakers at the seminar, Grant Thornton Malaysia partner Desmond Tan said companies seek financing facilities in order to fulfill their project investments. He offered an indepth analysis on suitable financing packages for companies so that SMEs could better understand their own strengths in achieving their goals of sustained development.

On the application for public listing, Tan said companies should hire capable and credible professionals to ensure success of their listing exercises.

The third speaker, Grant Thornton Malaysia senior executive director Seah Siew Yun said the long anticipated GST is not altogether a bane. She said aside from subsidies in daily necessities and the 1Malaysian aids, the imposition of GST will ensure that non-Malaysians, especially migrant workers, will not be entitled to the same kind of subsidies enjoyed by Malaysians, although at the end of the day all subsides will have to be borne by tax payers in the country.

"Once the GST is implemented, tax collection will now be spread across all levels of the society as it covers a very broad range. Everyone needs to consume and will therefore become indirect tax payers."
