Kuantan market ordered to close despite earlier approval

KUANTAN, Mar 18 (Sin Chew Daily) — The 14-day movement control order that comes into effect from today remains confusing among the people.

In Kuantan, the Kampung Jawa morning market was ordered to close this morning despite the approval for business given yesterday.

Kuantan municipal council said yesterday the market was allowed to operate during the movement control period from today until March 31, as it is a wet market. However, it issued a notice through Facebook early this morning that open air mobile stalls are not allowed to operate, including those at Kampung Jawa morning market.

Stalls were operating when Sin Chew Daily visited the market this morning. Nevertheless, municipal council officials were spotted distributing notices, warning stall owners flouting the no-business rule of up to RM2,000 fine and two years in jail.

At about nine in the morning, MPK enforcers were seen notifying stall owners to pack up and leave, or face punitive action.

They said they had received instruction from the National Security Council.
