Family fulfills young father’s wish of donating corneas

KUANTAN, Aug 7 (Sin Chew Daily) — The family members of a young father fulfill his wish of helping others by donating a pair of corneas after he was diagnosed as brain dead.

His widow Guo Xiu Ting, a hairstylist, shared the story of her late husband the possibility of donating organs after one was diagnosed as brain dead.

34-year-old salesman Li Guo Jun passed away at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan on Tuesday because of stroke.

His family members donated a pair of corneas as gift of sight to help two others.

Guo said her late husband was fond of helping the needy, and he used to teach his children by walking the talk of helping other people.

"The children are proud of him. They know their father has helped many people," said Guo.

Li's pair of corners as gift of sight have helped two people to regain their vision.

"He was unable to donate other organs due to the timing. The medical team must come from Kuala Lumpur to procure the organs. We are sorry that we have to give up donating his organs," she said.

It was race against time for her to sign the consent form to donate the organs and tissues within 48 hours, said Guo.

Li had pledged to donate his organs when he was still in the secondary school.

Guo said she would join him to pledge her organs by signing up as an organ donor.

The couple have a five-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter.

Li was experiencing numbness on July 23. He sought medical treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, and was discharged a few days later.

He returned to hospital for treatment on August 4 and lost his consciousness there.

He was subsequently diagnosed as brain dead by the doctors.
