KUANTAN, Sept 5 (Sin Chew Daily) — The story of a young Indian man earning a meager income as construction worker and his grandmother looking after an 87-year-old Chinese man, has moved many people.
Cash donations and goods contributed by well-wishers have started pouring in for them after Sin Chew Daily carried the news.
Thinagaran, 23, his grandmother M. Kamala, 71, and their old neighbor Ye Shu Wan, 87, are living in a rented house at Kupang Buaya near here.
Despite his unstable income, the young man insisted to take care of the two old people.
Semambu state assemblyman Lee Chean Chung's special officer Chan Chun Kuang recently paid them a visit after learning about their plight.
Chan said members of the public had since contacted him to offer their assistance after reading the report on Sin Chew Daily.
Some offered cash donations, while other contributed food. One of them even expressed the intention of offering long-term assistance to helf relieve Thinagaran's financial burden.
"As of now the Semambu service center has received cash donation amounting to RM5,750 from Kuantan and other parts of the country. We even have a cash donor from Australia," he said.
Kamala is apparently overjoyed with the new sofa set, bed, pillows and bedsheets sponsored by a furniture shop. She expressed her gratitude to all the kind donors.
She said people had come to visit her with rice, eggs and food over the last few days. One helped her to repair the water tap.
"I am very happy. There are many kind-hearted people around!" she said.
Ye also thanked the donors. He was reluctant to speak as his physical condition was getting worse.
