Tan Kok Wai not seeking re-election as DAP chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (Sin Chew Daily) — DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai is not seeking re-election as the party’s chairman.

However, he said he would still be contesting in the coming party elections for a position in the central executive committee (CEC) but would not be accepting nomination to contest for the top post.

Tan says it is time for him to let others take over the position to lead the party.

Tan, who is also the Member of Parliament for Cheras, said DAP is a party with discipline. The party has never been in crisis due to party elections, which is the reason it has been receiving strong support from the ground.

Tan believes there are many capable candidates in the party to take over him and the newly elected CEC would be able to shortlist the best candidates for key positions such as chairman, secretary-general and others.

He said this after attending a blood donation campaign at EkoCheras Mmall.

Tan was the acting DAP chairman after Karpal Singh passed away in a road accident in 2014.

He was later elected chairman in the 2017 party elections.

Tan has been a DAP member for 41 and a half years since he joined the party in April 1974, and has served in the CEC for 30 years in various positions such as national information chief, national organizing secretary, deputy chairman, vice chairman and chairman.
