ALOR SETAR, Dec 13 (Sin Chew Daily) — At the age of 25, Jocelyn Yow from Alor Setar is the mayor of Eastvale in California.

She is the youngest mayor in the United States, and her school SMJK Keat Hwa is very proud of her.

Yow graduated from Keat Hwa in 2011. Her father was once the president of Lion's Club in Alor Setar.

When she graduated from Keat Hwa, she wrote: "I am proud of Keat Hwa today, one day Keat Hwa will be proud of me."

Indeed, she is now an icon for all Chinese school students in Malaysia.

According to www.worldjournal.com, Yow took the oath to be the mayor on December 9.

Her father is a Chinese Malaysian while mother a Vietnamese. The family migrated to Eastvale in 2011.

Yow has created a series of records. She was elected as a council member of Eastvale in 2018 as the first Chinese female councilor and the youngest Asian councilor in southern California.

Yow said she was honored to be the mayor of Eastvale.

She is proud of the city, and being a new mother has motivated her to serve the community.

Local council policy has direct impact on the resident' lives. She is looking forward to serve the city to safeguard its future for the next generation and her son.

The first project that Yow, who has a six-month old baby, wishes to complete is to set up a library in Eastvale with a population of close to 73,000.

Lindsey Nitta, executive director of California Women Lead, a non-partisan organization set up to inspire women to seek their full leadership potential through education, training and network development, said Yow is a role model for women in politics.

Yow, who graduated from the University of California Berkeley, is the policy manager of non-governmental organization IGNITE. Prior to this, she worked for Congressman Gil Cisneros and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Eastvale is a city located in Riverside County in southern California. It was developed from a dairy farm enclave and incorporated to be a city on Oct 1, 2010.
