Education ministry serious about rape joke: Mah

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr (29) — The ministry of education has a complete set of systems to handle complaints such as the rape joke made by a physical education teacher recently, says deputy education minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

Members of the public can lodge a complaint or give their feedback through the ministry's website.

Parents or students who encounter issues can lodge a complaint through the website, visit the state education department or district education office for the relevant department in the ministry for an immediate investigation, said Mah after chairing a press conference.

"I must stress that the ministry will not compromise on the safety of children at school," he said.

Mah said each time a complaint is lodged, it would serve as a reminder to the ministry to draft an even more thorough policy to make sure all policies are executed and complied with.

"The ministry is responsible to ensure teachers and staff are complying with the code of conduct," he said.

Referring to the case of a physical education teacher who joked about rape, Mah said his ministry had sent some officers, including the state education department director and district education officers to the school.

Teachers and students in the class were questioned by the officers during the investigation.

Mah said he believed police had opened a file to investigate the matter as well while the ministry had sent a team of officers to the school.

"We hope members of the public can keep their heads cool. Do not judge the students, teachers, school and parents at this moment, pending the outcome of the investigation," he said.

The ministry would take appropriate action according to the regulations against teachers who have violated the code of conduct, he added/
