RM3m worth of cryptocurrency stolen after phone repair

KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Sin Chew Daily) — A man has lost RM3 million worth of cryptocurrency after sending his smartphone for repair.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said the police received a report lodged by a man losing his cryptocurrency after sending his smartphone for repair.

The man did not log out from his digital wallet when he sent the phone for repair.

"After his smartphone was repaired, the man discovered that his digital wallet was hacked. He suspected that the phone repair shop employee had duplicated information stored in his phone to steal his cryptocurrency.

"Initial investigation by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department showed that the suspect used similar device as the complainant. Investigation is still ongoing," he said.

Zainuddin said the police were still gathering evidence at this moment and the case was classified as cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

He urged members of the public to log out from their cryptocurrency accounts before sending their smartphones for repair.
