Selangor DAP convention and DAP national congress likely deferred due to MCO

PETALING JAYA, May 12 (Sin Chew Daily) — The Selangor DAP convention and DAP national congress scheduled to be held next month are likely to be deferred due to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The Selangor DAP convention is scheduled to be held on June 6 while the DAP national congress on June 20.

As the nationwide MCO is enforced until June 7, the Selangor DAP convention will not be held until the MCO is lifted.

Selangor DAP deputy chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah confirmed with Sin Chew Daily that the state committee had requested to defer the convention, pending notification from party headquarters.

A total of five states have not held their state conventions as of this moment and the national congress can only be held after all state conventions have been held.

Sources said those states are believed to be unable to hold the state conventions before June 20.

DAP will need to apply to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to defer its national convention for a second time.

The five states which have not held their state conventions are Sarawak (May 1), Federal Territory Labuan (May 22), Perlis (May 30), Selangor (June 6) and Sabah (May 23).

Due to the implementation of MCO, it is unknown if any of the state conventions can be held.

The national congress of DAP was originally scheduled to be held on December 20 last year in Shah Alam.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ROS agreed to DAP's request to defer the convention until June 30.

If the national convention cannot be held on June 20, it will have to request for a deferment from ROS again.

It is learned that nominations for positions in the state committee and central executive committee at national level while party elections are to be held during the state convention and national congress respectively, have closed on May 7.

The party election is held every three years.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who has served three terms and reached the limit set by party constitution, is expected to step down while a new secretary-general will be elected in the party election.
